Four arrested and officer hurt in violent disorder
Following a late night meeting, 4 people were arrested for violent disorder. France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals I saw a police officer injured in central London.
Police were first called on Thursday evening after a group of people gathered on Edgware Road and blocked traffic. The Metropolitan Police said the incident then “escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks”.
A police officer was taken to hospital with a head injury after he was believed to have been hit with a glass bottle.
Westminster City Council leader Paul Swaddle condemned the behavior and called on World Cup fans to “be respectful throughout the tournament”.
Images on social media show fireworks being set off as riot police arrived at the scene.
The Met said no further injuries were reported in the incident and the group dispersed when the road reopened around 01:00 GMT.
“We will not tolerate this type of disorder on our streets or attacks on our officers,” the union spokesman added.
“We will review CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.”
