Four Assam police commandos were injured in an extremist attack in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district in the early hours of Sunday, March 22, 2026.

The attackers, suspected to be from a banned group, fired indiscriminately and threw several grenades at the commando camp in Jagun, near the Arunachal Pradesh border, district officials said.

The commandos retaliated and the gunfight continued for about 30 minutes before the attackers escaped. 3 of the 4 injured people were seriously injured. Police said they were taken to the hospital.

“We launched a coordinated operation with other forces to find the attackers,” an official said.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, members of the Paresh Baruah-led faction of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) have been conducting intermittent operations along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Jagun is less than 50 km from the closest point to Arunachal Pradesh’s Myanmar border, where ULFA(I) has its camps.
