Four people have died from flash floods in Kentucky, governor says | Kentucky

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said four people died as a result of flooding caused by thunderstorms that brought up to 7 inches (18 cm) of rain to the state.

Beshear confirmed four deaths in his social media post, stating that three people were from Madison County and one was from Jackson County. “Please join Britainy and me in praying for their families during this difficult time,” Beshear said.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for parts of Kentucky and Indiana on Saturday.

Some areas in southwestern Indiana were seeing 4 to 10 inches of rain, with more possible, the weather service said late Saturday.

Beshear declared a state of emergency on Saturday and said in a statement that heavy rains were expected to continue until 11 p.m.

“This is a severe flooding event where crews had to conduct multiple water rescues from vehicles and homes across the state,” Beshear said. “With heavy rain continuing into late tonight, we need people to stay alert and avoid driving, especially after dark when visibility is poor.”

In northwestern Kentucky, just outside of Louisville, Bullitt County emergency management officials asked residents of rural roads to evacuate as a precaution following a dam landslide. They said the dam was holding up and there was no sign it would fail anytime soon.

The area has seen nearly 3 inches of rain over the past two days, according to the National Weather Service.
