Morgan Rogers: Aston Villa attacker ‘has to start’ for England at World Cup

Foden has spoken about his struggles off the field last season and carrying injuries which meant he was not able to display his best form.
But the 25-year-old is getting closer to what he can do, scoring his 10th goal of the season in City’s hard-fought win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Six of those goals have come in their last five games; This shows his progress as the season ramps up and City chase league leaders Arsenal.
Foden’s goal – when he curled a low effort into the bottom corner after good work from team-mate Rayan Cherki – will impress Tuchel watching at Selhurst Park.
Despite scoring, Foden lost possession 16 times against Palace; This was the highest loss for his team along with Matheus Nunes.
This was highlighted by boss Pep Guardiola saying after the match that Foden “lost the ball a lot and was in a hurry”.
“He needs to stay calm and change gears at the right time,” the Spaniard added. “He is very fast because he plays in the same gear.
“He’s so young, he’s listening and he’s saying he’s had an incredibly great season.”
Foden agreed, telling BBC Match of the Day: “I gave away too much of the ball in the first half and was trying to do too much with it. “Against Palace you have to relax and play extra passes.
“That’s the standard I set and the manager’s too. He knows there’s more to come from me.”
Foden’s prowess from outside the area has meant he has scored eight goals from this position since the start of the 2023-24 season; During this period, only Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe (14) could score more goals in Europe’s five major leagues.
He also scored in four consecutive Premier League matches for the second time in his career.
“He’s in phenomenal form,” said former England goalkeeper and Match of the Day pundit Joe Hart. “You could say he’s in an unreal flow right now.
“City were smart to place Foden on the edge of the box and get to the right place at the right time.”
