Son who found mother’s body after Storm Babet calls for more flood defence money | Flooding

The son of an 83 -year -old woman who died during Storm Babet called for more money to protect houses from floods.

An investigation in Chesterfield Coroner’s Court heard that Maureen Gilbert drowned at Chesterfield after the Rother River broke its banks during the storm on October 21, 2023.

Storm Babet claimed that there were seven lives in the UK, led to the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from their homes, and caused more than £ more than £ 450 million.

The assistant assistant Matthew Kewley gave a brief narrative that Gilbert said that he had died in his home because of drowning in the flood waters caused by Storm Babet ”and that he still believes that there was a risk of life because of his inappropriate flood defenses.

“I am worried that another adverse weather, such as Storm Babet, is a risk of people who may be old, vulnerable or still in the Tasteton Terrace,” he said.

Paul Gilbert, who found that his mother swam in the house of his mother’s body after saying that the water came to his house, accepted that the street where his mother died was still at risk and told journalists that more funds for flood defenses could save lives in the future.

“Floods need to be deposited more because this is something that will continue clearly,” he said. “I believe that more money is available and longer -term plans are made. I still believe that scanning rivers and cleaning the rivers is the most important thing for me.”

The investigation, flood firefighters and rescue services to save Gilbert on the evening heard that “he did everything they could do reasonable and safe”, but he had to stop after he darkened too much. Derbyshire Fire Department and Rescue Service Deputy Director of Fire Department Cliive Stanbrook, said in a statement: “Maureen’s entire family and my friends who lost their loved ones in destructive and sad conditions.

“I want to make sure we have learned from this incident earlier, we have invested in great investments in our systems and in our operational processes, we did something that was noted by judicial medicalists.”
