Legendary French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has died at the age of 91, her foundation announced Sunday.
“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with great sadness the death of its founder and president, world-famous actress and singer Madame Brigitte Bardot, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to devote her life and energies to animal welfare and her foundation.” in a statement to the French news agency Agence France-Presse.
According to a statement made by her office to AFP, Bardot was briefly hospitalized at Saint-Jean Hospital in Toulon in late October, where she underwent a minor surgical procedure.

The iconic actress became known for her “sex kitten” image, a label that defined her on-screen persona in the 1950s and 1960s.
