From courts to critics, Trump runs into reality as setbacks mount

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Trump hasn’t had a great week. I don’t think anyone can object to this.

The man who so dominated the Republican Party was forced to step back or reverse, in part because of on-the-record anger from GOP lawmakers.

This included a plan to create a $1.8 billion “anti-proliferation” fund; Most of this funding will go to the Jan. 6 rioters, whom he calls patriots. They attacked police officers, took over members’ rooms, and chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” The idea of rewarding people who chant slogans like: It touched a very deep nerve (also among the public).

When leaders of his own party, who often play dead, began denouncing what some call a slush fund, Trump knew he had a loser on his hands and tried to cut his losses yesterday: He practically killed the financing scheme.

This, of course, stemmed from Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS, in which he was certainly wronged by the leak of his tax returns, but the president was “negotiating” with his subordinates.

Then there are the courts, where even the Supreme Court can’t seem to shake Trump’s anger over decisions he doesn’t like, like the unilateral reduction of global tariffs. He called out the judges by name and branded them “idiots and lapdogs”, a “disgrace” and a “disgrace”.

Which brings us to the Kennedy Center debacle.

A federal judge has ordered Trump’s name removed from the sparkling marble portico overlooking the Potomac River recently used as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The judge temporarily blocked the two-year closure, which was scheduled to begin this summer.

The president stated that he had “no interest in continuing a hopeless journey” as long as he was out of office, and suggested that he would turn the matter over to Congress.

“Unfortunately, Judge Cooper and the Radical Left would rather see this DEATH than have President Trump turn it into something everyone can be proud of, just as I have done on many occasions throughout my life,” he wrote.

Judge Christopher Cooper, setting a two-week deadline, said Trump’s renaming violated a 1964 law that “clearly” stipulates that the institution must be named after the assassinated president, and only Congress can change that.

I think the center may remain open during partial renovations, but of course no shows are booked at this time.

The bigger picture is that many judges no longer trust administration lawyers.

“Their missteps in court come as the department’s leadership takes an unusually belligerent tone toward judges who rule against them,” says The New York Times.

A Trump Justice Department spokesman said: “Any attack on the professionalism or integrity of DOJ attorneys is outrageous and unfair.”

Finally, there is the court of public opinion for Trump, who will turn 80 next month.

Many people are upset with the design of the $250 bill that features Trump’s face. I’m not worried about it because I don’t plan on buying anything with a $250 bill, but it didn’t work out so well.

I don’t believe many people are freaking out about the surprise demolition of the East Wing, plans for the 800-foot arch, or the obsession with building a ballroom in the White House. Originally this was to be paid for by private donations, but now Congress wants to appropriate $1 billion in taxpayer dollars; kind of bait and switch.

The popularity of the Iran War, whose solution “talks” were frustrated by mutual attacks, is gradually decreasing. A PBS/Marist poll last month found that 60 percent of respondents disapproved of the war and were generally disappointed with rising food and gas prices.

As for the Fourth of July celebration, many musicians, including Milli Vanilli, Flo Rida, and Young MC, walked out after the president canceled the concert and turned it into a MAGA rally, which he also appeared at.

Look, Donald Trump has always been at the center of his own narrative. He’s a natural artist, dating back to his “Apprentice” days.

I’ve interviewed Trump many times, and he can sit for an hour and give answers on a wide range of topics, including topics from 40 years ago. So any talk of him being on the verge of dementia is complete nonsense from uninformed critics. But he seems less sure now.

Physically, the worst thing you can say about Trump is that his ankles are swollen and that he sometimes closes his eyes in meetings.

Trump is ahead at full speed; That’s what he knows. Where he seems angry and overheated is in his barrage of late-night and early-morning Truth Social posts in which he rails against his opponents.

Hey, you don’t really expect an 80-year-old man to change, do you?
