From Ibiza to the World Cup! Tottenham star cuts short holiday after receiving late call-up from world champions Argentina

Tottenham’s new transfer, Marcos Senesi, cut short his Ibiza holiday after being called up to Argentina’s World Cup squad for the last time.

Senesi, whose free transfer from Bournemouth to Tottenham was confirmed on Wednesday, has been waiting to hear whether he could join the 26-man world champion squad in recent days.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has been weighing his options in recent days following the injury of Marseille defender Leonardo Balerini.

Senesi was on holiday in Ibiza with his girlfriend and fellow footballer Kelci Bowers, who recently left the Bournemouth women’s team.

Bowers shared a video of himself receiving news of Senesi’s call-up, explaining that he received a call from the Argentina national team as he was about to go to dinner.

“We just got back from Miami where we were on vacation and came to Ibiza for some fun and relaxation,” Senesi said while on the phone.

‘But all this time neither of us stopped, we were both aware of the injury situation of a centre-back.

‘Neither of us have been able to fully enjoy ourselves this whole time, you know what I mean.

‘And now Marcos has just been summoned. He was called to the World Cup, are you kidding?

‘This is literally what we both prayed for, she was thinking about it every day.’

After Senesi put down the phone, both she and Bowers hugged and screamed in celebration.

The call-up is a reward for Senesi’s fine season at Bournemouth; here he helped the Cherries finish sixth in the Premier League and qualify for the Europa League.

The defender, who also has the right to represent Italy, has played for Argentina only three times throughout his career.

He will now join the squad as Argentina aims to defend the World Cup.

Argentina’s first group match will be against Algeria on Wednesday, before matches against Austria and Jordan.
