FSSAI Issues Notice to Swiggy Instamart Over Alleged Spoiled, Expired Food
New Delhi: Food regulator FSSAI on Saturday said it had issued 9 notices to Swiggy Instamart following numerous consumer complaints, including allegations that the platform was supplying rotten and expired food products.
Instamart is Swiggy’s flash commerce platform.
Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said in a social media post about X that it had “issued 9 notices to Swiggy Instamart following numerous consumer complaints regarding violations under the FSS Act 2006.”
Meanwhile, an Instamart spokesperson said: “We are reviewing the listings flagged by FSSAI and are in touch with authorities to resolve the same.”
The regulator said consumer complaints against the platform alleged that expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated and otherwise unsafe food products were supplied through Swiggy Instamart.
The regulator directed the platform to provide a detailed explanation and compliance report on what appropriate legal action to take.
Elaborating on consumer complaints, FSSAI said: “An infant formula formulation was reportedly found in a highly degraded and unsafe condition, showing signs of contamination and improper storage and handling.”
It was claimed that the same product was sent again after it was returned. The complaints also alleged that dirty eggs and milk, as well as damaged packaged food items, were delivered through Swiggy Instamart.
FSSAI also observed incorrect, invalid or non-existent FSSAI license number. It was alleged that the food business establishments were listed under different names than those reflected in the FSSAI Registers.
“Some complaints alleged that despite raising or escalating the complaints, no satisfactory response, complaint resolution or corrective action was taken, while one complaint stated that only refunds were offered without addressing the food safety concerns raised,” FSSAI said. he said.
The regulator said these notifications raise concerns about vendor involvement, compliance verification, traceability, monitoring of food quality, redressal of consumer complaints, supervision of food business activities and the adequacy of food safety compliance systems.
Recently, the regulator has been posting on social media platforms about the action it has taken against food business operators (FBOs).
Notifications are based on consumer complaints as well as awareness of the suo slogan.
Recently, FSSAI has issued notices to many energy drink manufacturers, alcoholic beverage companies, food companies and flash trading platforms.
