Masters champion Rory McIlroy avoided a major scare on Friday afternoon, sneaking into the weekend venue at the Australian Open at Royal Melbourne and averting tournament organisers’ worst nightmare.
The Northern Irish star took an air swing and made bogey on the par-5 14th, sending waves of fear around the composite course that he might miss the cut.

But he eventually birdied three of the final four holes, including the 18th, to shoot three-under 68, meaning he finished inside the cut line.
McIlroy’s playing partners Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee shot 66 and 65 in qualifying on Friday to challenge for the Stonehaven Cup.
