Furious Aussies unleash on backpackers who dumped 20 TONNES of rubbish on Sydney’s iconic Coogee Beach during ‘Orphans Christmas’ celebrations – as frustrated mayor lashes out: ‘Filthy’

Angry locals have accused Christmas Day revelers of being ‘filthy’ after one of Australia’s most iconic beaches was covered in 20 tonnes of rubbish.

Thousands of people flocked to Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Christmas Day in scenes some likened to a nightclub.

But as the crowds dispersed late Thursday evening, 20 tons of trash, including cans, food wrappers and abandoned cooler bags, were left behind.

The disgusting scenes are reminiscent of those at Bronte Beach last year, when more than 15,000 people flocked to an unauthorized gathering dubbed ‘Orphan’s Christmas’ or ‘Backpacker Christmas’.

Waverley Council has urged beachgoers to stay away from Bronte this year due to safety concerns due to ongoing construction work.

Alcohol bottles, blankets, cooler bags, plastic bottles and food wrappers were just some of the items left behind in Coogee as council crews began a massive clean-up on Friday.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker has assured locals that next year will be different, with the council considering installing fencing around the public park.

“While we absolutely know how important it is for people to have a fun and enjoyable Christmas, we want it to be respectful,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

In his statement on Facebook, the mayor thanked municipal employees for their efforts.

‘In total, more than 20 tonnes of rubbish were collected and four truckloads were sent to the rubbish collection point,’ he said.

‘Staff used beach rakes, footpath sweepers, high-pressure hoses and hands-on cleaning to clear litter and clear toilets, sand and grassy areas.

‘While many people act responsibly, it is disappointing that some choose to litter so much and urinate in public spaces.’

Locals were not impressed by the sight either and took to social media to condemn the revelers for leaving so much trash behind.

‘Some people are dirty pigs. All the nonsense at Coogee Beach yesterday. It’s so disgusting. One man wrote: There’s no excuse for these stinky maggots.

‘I’m sick of backpackers trashing beaches on Christmas day. ‘Bronte was off the list this year so they went to Coogee and scrapped it,’ said another. ‘It’s time for councils to start charging entrance fees to make the pigs pay for the clean-up.’

Others thanked city workers for the massive cleanup effort.

‘Randwick Council has done an incredible job and locals are now combing the ground for broken glass,’ one woman said. ‘I have no problem but there must be some responsibility for this mess… it hasn’t been like this for over ten years.’

Another added: ‘We can’t keep destroying the only planet we have to live on.’

Drinks were flowing on Christmas Day, despite Randwick Council’s reminders that Coogee Beach and the nearby park are alcohol-free zones.

Riot police teams attended the celebrations, but no arrests were made.

Smaller crowds than usual were seen at Bondi and Bronte Beach.

Although the iconic beach was crowded, the tourist destination appeared quieter than in previous years as the country mourned the horrific Bondi attack.

Following the clash, a floral memorial remained on the footbridge while police patrolled the cordon.
