Teen dead, six more in hospital after alleged overtaking manoeuvre results in horror crash in Melbourne

A teenager has died and scores of people have been taken to hospital after a horrific crash in Melbourne’s west.
Initial investigations suggested that a blue Honda CRV carrying four teenage children attempted to overtake a car but misjudged the distance while speeding and collided with two vehicles on Hopkins Road in Truganina at around 9.15pm on Thursday.
A 17-year-old young man from Kurunjang died at the scene.
Three other male occupants of the Honda, all teenagers, were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Honda, an 18-year-old Williams Landing man, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
In the second vehicle, a 23-year-old man from Tarneit, Melbourne, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Two 18-year-old women were in the third vehicle, a red sedan, when the Honda CRV collided head-on.

“So I thought: ‘There’s no way this could have just happened, did they care where it came from?’” Marina Ivanovska told 9News.
Ms Ivanovska was driving with her cousin in the passenger seat. While the women were taken to hospital with minor injuries, Ms Ivanovska had abrasions on her hand and bruises on her abdomen.

The Honda driver breached a red P-plate license condition for carrying more passengers in the car than allowed, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Glenn Weir said on Friday.
A major crash investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

“Detectives would like to speak to everyone in the area prior to the collision,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
Anyone who witnessed the collision via CCTV/dashcam or other footage or information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
