The rule itself is not new, but it has come under new scrutiny amid Trump’s sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration.

The automatic draft registration provision was included in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress in December and signed by Trump.

Automatic enrollment of eligible men aged 18-25 is expected to begin in December 2026.

This does not mean that the President will reintroduce the bill; it merely changes how men will be registered if called upon.

Under current federal law, men who turn 18 must register with the Selective Service System in case they are drafted.

Americans haven’t been drafted since Vietnam; The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were fought entirely by volunteer forces.
