Gabriel Martinelli hat-trick shows ‘big personality’, says Mikel Arteta
From being branded an “idiot” to scoring a hat-trick, Gabriel Martinell’s name has been making headlines over the last few days.
The Arsenal winger was heavily criticized for trying to push injured Conor Bradley off the pitch in the closing stages of Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Thursday, for which he apologized on social media.
But according to his boss, the 24-year-old’s first hat-trick for Arsenal – as they came from behind to beat Championship side Portsmouth to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday – showed his “personality”.
“It’s part of football and it’s how you take it that matters,” Mikel Arteta said when asked how Martinelli managed to be the subject of so much controversy.
“But deep down he knew the reason for what he did.”
Arteta also praised Liverpool boss Arne Slot for his thoughtful response to the incident when defending the Brazilian.
“I think Arne Slot spoke brilliantly after the game, talking about your opponent explaining the situation and talking about the fact that Gabi had no intention of harming any players,” added Arteta.
“It’s personality. Come and speak on the field, and that’s the best part.”
Martinelli had a mixed season, losing his first place in the Premier League to Leandro Trossard after a loss of form and confidence.
He made just six starts for Arsenal, who sit six points clear at the top of the table.
However, the winger has been a key player for Arsenal in the Champions League this season, scoring five goals in as many games. He is now his team’s top scorer after his hat-trick against Portsmouth.
“That’s why you need a big personality to play for a big club, because it could be bad… it could be a move you miss, it could be something that costs you a game,” Arteta added.
“And there is a match in three days, so you have to pull yourself together and take advantage of it.
“I love it. Gabi, in every context you put her in, she’s playing, she’s not playing. She’s performing well, she’s not performing well. She scored three goals today.”
“He’ll definitely be training at 100 miles per hour tomorrow. He’s not going to change that. And that’s Gabi.”
