Gabriel penalty: Why Champions League final penalty miss was ‘cruel blow’ for Arsenal standout

The sight of Gabriel wiping away his tears as PSG players celebrated the trophy will remain in the memories of Arsenal fans for a long time.
One of Mikel Arteta’s first signings after taking over in December 2019, the Brazilian has been the driving force behind the club’s rise to the top of English football and winning the Premier League title this season.
He started 48 of Arsenal’s 63 matches in all competitions and contributed nine goals and assists; this was more than both Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus.
While rival fans may focus on his Budapest miss, Arsenal fans will remember the numerous highlights he delivered on his behalf, including his dramatic 96th-minute winner against Newcastle United in September.
“I heard Declan Rice say he was at a loss for words to describe Gabriel because he’s been such an important, such a good part for Arsenal all season and over the last few years,” former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha told BBC Sport.
“That’s why it’s heartbreaking that he was the one who missed the penalty that cost us the Champions League final.
“But I think everyone will rally around him because Arsenal wouldn’t have won the Premier League without him. He was an invaluable human being and is rightly being talked about for the PFA Player of the Year.
“There is always pressure in penalty shoot-outs. You can practice penalties in training, but you can never really prepare for that moment in the Champions League final. Unfortunately, he experienced what every player fears; he missed the penalty that would decide the final.”
Former England defender Upson added: “This is one of those moments that will be remembered for years to come, a brutal blow for a player who has been a tower of strength for Arsenal.
“Gabriel gave everything for his team. He showed the mentality and courage to step forward and take responsibility, which is all you can ask for from any player.
“It’s very sad for him, but he strikes me as someone who will recover quickly and use that as motivation. He still has a very important summer ahead of him in Brazil.”
