Gandhi Statue Disfigured in Guruvayur
Thiruvananthapuram: Visitors to the Bio Park in Guruvayur municipality in Kerala’s Thrissur district were amazed recently.
The reason for their astonishment was the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, which bore no resemblance to the Father of the Nation except for his glasses and walking stick.
The statue had been under construction in the park for several days and people were eagerly waiting for it to be unveiled. But the crowd stood in disbelief as the curtains were drawn to reveal a disfigured-looking face.
Many thought it was an insult to Gandhi ji, but the CPM-led LDF-led municipality defended the statue.
“There is a deliberate attempt to create controversy. The state is in an abstract form and will be completed soon,” Mayor M Krishnadas said.
Reports suggest that the sculptor also defended the work and explained that Gandhi’s ideas were used in the design.
Despite the statements of the sculptor and the civic body, Congress-led student organization KSU filed a complaint with the Thrissur Collector, demanding strict action against the civic body for insulting Gandhi.
Many visitors to the site jokingly said that the statue reminded them of one of Gandhi’s three monkeys, symbolizing “seeing no evil”.
