Gang boss George Marrogi gets time added to near-50-year sentence for ‘brutal’ attack
Gangland boss George Marrogi has had another month added to his nearly 50-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to kicking a guard in the chest.
The 36-year-old man, who is serving a sentence for a gangland murder and drug trafficking, will not be eligible for parole until 2049.
He imprisoned crime boss George Marrogi.
This is the first time a judge has increased Marrogi’s prison sentence, even though he has previously been convicted of multiple violent incidents while incarcerated, including assault and setting fires.
On Thursday, Marrogi pleaded guilty to assaulting a corrections officer for powerfully kicking a guard in the chest after he was removed from a cell on Feb. 25, 2024.
Footage was played at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court showing Marrogi launching the attack as soon as the door opened, in what judge Michelle Hodgson described as a “swift but brutal” attack.
Hodgson noted that Marrogi had repeatedly engaged in violent and destructive behavior in prison, but until then he had only been punished with concurrent sentences.
“I need to specifically dissuade you and I need to take into account the protection of custody staff,” Hodgson said.
“I will then give you an additional month. Mr. Marrogi, you are at a point where this type of behavior will be marked by subsequent prison sentences.
“It may seem a little pointless given the length of your prison term, but if it continues it will be marked by an extension.”
