Gaurav Taneja expresses his desire to fly for free
As IndiGo faces its worst crisis, it looks like someone has come to the rescue of India’s largest airlines. Gaurav Taneja, one of India’s top YouTubers, has offered to fly an IndiGo flight “for free”, but only if the airline complies with the revised rules. The commercial airline pilot, in a social media post, made it clear that he is ready to fly an IndiGo flight for free if the airline starts complying with the recently introduced Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). The statement emphasized security concerns.
Expressing his willingness to volunteer, ‘Flying Monster’ wrote to X: “Dear @IndiGo6E I am ready to fly for free. But I want to keep passengers safe in New FDTL.”
What steps has the airline taken amid the ongoing crisis?
As the crisis does not seem to end, IndiGo officials have formed a Crisis Management Group (CMG) to keep track of all aspects related to the current situation. CMG, which was formed at its first meeting on December 4, meets every day to closely follow all issues related to the current situation. On Sunday, November 7, CEO Pieter Elbers released a new video message to passengers and employees in which he said: ‘We are coming back.’ He also said that IndiGo has recovered from the recent disruptions and aims to operate around 1,650 flights on Sunday. The government has directed IndiGo to process the refund and clear all pending refunds by 8 pm on Sunday. Following this, IndiGo has refunded Rs 610 billion and returned 3000 lost luggage so far.
What do the new FDTL rules say?
While 7% of the 2,300 daily flights were canceled within 48 hours, Delhi was hit the hardest, with 235 flights canceled in a single day.
According to the new rules, which were implemented in two stages in July and November:
-The new rules make pilots responsible for their duties, flight hours, landing limits and mandatory rest. This is done to reduce the level of fatigue in pilots and bring them into line with global standards.
-According to Phase 2 rules, the weekly rest period of pilots was increased from 36 hours to 48 hours, night duties were rearranged as 00:00-06:00, the number of night landings per pilot was reduced from six to two, and consecutive night duties were limited to two.
Why didn’t IndiGo comply with the new rules?
The airline faced many problems at the same time, which resulted in a huge failure. Reasons such as high winter schedules, pilot shortages and technical problems such as A320 software errors led to long delays and heavy cancellations. More than 500 flights have now been cancelled, with Delhi being the worst affected
