General Subramani takes charge as new Chief of Defence Staff

General NS Raja Subramani, widely known as an expert on Pakistan and China, took office as India’s new Chief of Defense Staff on Sunday, May 31, 2026, with the primary mandate to implement the ambitious military theaterization plan and promote tri-service synergy.

He succeeds General Anil Chauhan, who resigned after completing his term as the country’s most senior military commander on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

Gen. Subramani was serving as Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He retired as Deputy Chief of General Staff on July 31 last year.

Shortly after taking over, the military official said that transforming the armed forces and organizational reforms to improve tri-service synergy and integration would be the primary focus.

“We will accelerate the development, launch and integration of indigenous weapons into our armed forces,” he said in a brief media statement.

“Our armed forces have consistently demonstrated professionalism and operational determination in protecting our national interests. We are determined to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country,” he said.

“I assure the citizens of India that the armed forces will continue to serve the nation with dedication, courage, honor and professionalism,” he added.

Gen. Subramani also stated that he will work to accelerate the development, launch and integration of indigenous weapon systems into the armed forces.

As Chief of Defense Staff, General Subramani’s primary task will be to implement the theaterization model by expanding integrated military commands.

During his illustrious career spanning over 40 years, General Subramani served in a wide range of conflict and terrain profiles and held numerous Command, Staff and Instructional appointments.

He served as Deputy Commander of the Army from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025, and as General Officer Commanding General of Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.

The officer is a graduate of the National Defense Academy and the Indian Military Academy.

He was commissioned in the eighth battalion of Garhwal Rifles on 14 December 1985.

Gen. Subramani is a graduate of the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Bracknell (UK) and the National Defense College, New Delhi. He holds an MA from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defense Studies from the University of Madras.

He commanded 16 Garhwal Rifles in counter-insurgency operations in Assam, 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir and 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector under Operation Rhino during a challenging operational environment.

He also distinguished himself by commanding two corps, including the leading assault corps of the Indian Army on the Western Front.

General Subramani’s personnel and training assignments include Brigade Major of the Mountain Brigade, Defense Attaché in Kazakhstan, Deputy Military Secretary in the Military Secretariat Branch, Deputy Commander of the Rashtriya Rifles Sector in Jammu and Kashmir and Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defense (Army).

He also served as Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at Eastern Command, Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington, and Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Command.

For his outstanding services, the General Officer was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.
