US police officer killed in hotel room shootout

A man is accused of shooting two U.S. marshals after inviting them to his hotel room in Atlanta, killing one and seriously wounding the other.
The suspect was also shot by one of the officers, received medical treatment and is expected to survive, Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said at a news conference.
The shooting occurred Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, about 40 kilometers northeast of Atlanta.
The police chief said officers were dispatched to the hotel after a caller reported that a person staying there was committing “scam or forgery” to rent a room.
The suspect greeted the officers at the door of his room and invited them in.
“They started discussing the scenario or the plot with him,” McClure said.
“And at one point, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired at our Gwinnett County police officers in an unprovoked attack.”
Police officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, died from his injuries at the hospital, McClure said.
Tamang, a Nepalese citizen, joined the police department last year.
Office David Reed was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
“This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement faces daily, and we are grateful to all who put themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians,” Governor Brian Kemp said on social media platform X.
McClure identified the shooting suspect as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews.
The investigation was being turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which traditionally handles law enforcement-involved shootings in the state.
McClure said it will be up to the GBI and local prosecutors to decide what charges to bring against Andrews.
