German artist Georg Baselitz, whose impressive paintings and sculptures sparked controversy before gaining worldwide acclaim, died at the age of 88, according to local media.

Born Hans-Georg Kern, Baselitz was among Germany’s most prominent contemporary visual artists with his works in a variety of techniques for over sixty years.
