MLA demands immediate launch of phase II seawall construction in Chellanam

Mohammed Shiyas, MLA, demanded immediate initiation of the second phase of construction of tetrapod-based sea wall along the unprotected coastline of Chellanam panchayat.

He was attending the meeting held at the district collectorate on Saturday, May 30, 2026, to review the second phase of the project. Mr. Shiyas said that the obstacles to the construction should be removed as soon as possible and the relevant authorities should take the necessary interventions.

“A new project should be designed and submitted to the State government for the beautification and protection of the coastline stretching between Chellanam and Fort Kochi,” he said. District Collector G. Priyanka said that deployment of geo-bags is on to prevent naval attack.

While the second phase of work was awarded to the Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), the agreement could not be implemented due to the announcement of the election and the model of conduct came into force. The technical sanction of the project is still awaited.

The Chellanam-Kochi Janakeeya Vedhi, which has been at the forefront of the agitation for a protected coast, escalated its 2,409-day long protest with a dharna on Saturday to draw attention to its pre-monsoon woes. Vedhi requested Puthenthode to take urgent steps to start the construction of the sea wall at the earliest.

Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had inaugurated the second phase, 6.10 kilometers long from Puthenthode to Manassery, on March 7, 2026, which will be financed by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Although no timeline has been announced for its completion, many affected families encouraged by the project have returned after using the resources to repair homes damaged by sea attacks. He was raised with great difficulty. The first phase of the project, covering an area of ​​7.3 km from Chellanam to Puthenthode, was undertaken by ULCCS at a cost of ₹347 crore, funded under KIIFB.
