Lt. Col. David Annotel, spokesman for the French National Federation of Fire Fighters, told franceinfo that “the real challenge is endurance.”

The official explained that the situation is very similar to the 2022 Landiras forest fire. The Landiras fire was one of the largest fires in modern French history. It was not officially declared extinguished until October 2025.

He said: “We are facing a similar situation. For weeks and months, teams from all over France will have to keep coming here on a rotational basis.

“We need to make the most of the next two or three days while temperatures remain relatively normal to slow the spread of the fire and get to a point where it is no longer feeding so much from vegetation or rising temperatures.

“Higher temperatures will make conditions more difficult. Days will become more difficult, nights will become more difficult.”
