Gold Coast publisher Business News Australia shuts down

Queensland publisher Business News Australia has appointed a liquidator, shutting down its online news site sometimes confused with our Perth-based news site. Business News Operation.
Menzies Consulting director Michael Caspaney was this morning appointed liquidator of Business News Australia Pty Ltd, which publishes under this banner and also owns the business names Gold Coast Business News and Brisbane Business News and hosts a business awards programme.
Business News Australia editor Matthew Ogg has confirmed that the business, which founder Camilla Westerlund described as her life’s work, has been liquidated.
Broadbeach Waters-based Ms Westerlund is the sole director and shareholder of Business News Australia, which has an address at Varsity Lakes on the southern tip of the Gold Coast.
He has been an officer of the company since 2000, when it was registered initially under Etch Pty Ltd, then Gold Coast Business News Pty Ltd, then Business News Publications Pty Ltd and finally under its current name, which was adopted in 2014.
The operations and ownership of Business News Australia are unrelated to its Perth-based publisher, Business News Pty Ltd. Business News fortnightly magazine and www.businessnews.com.au, but there has been confusion in the market as the east coast player looks to expand its presence into Western Australia.

In a post on LinkedIn, Ms Westerlund said the publishing project started as a print imprint on the Gold Coast for more than 20 years, then expanded into events with the Young Entrepreneur Awards in 2008, before aiming to reach a national market with a digital platform focusing on founders, regional innovators and businesses outside the ASX 100.
“Over time, the economics of independent publishing have changed in ways that have made our model unsustainable,” he said.
“Despite constant adaptation and effort, the gap between the value of journalism and the returns achieved continued to widen and eventually became too much to overcome.”
