Gold, silver objects stolen at temple near Arakkonam

Thieves made off with 12 sovereign gold ornaments, silver objects and cash from an Amman temple in Kilvenbakkam village of Nemili panchayat union near Arakkonam town of Ranipet on Saturday.

Police said it was around 6 a.m. when a group of residents and temple priests arrived at the local Amman temple. They found that the lock on the temple door was broken. They found that the gold jewelery on the god was missing. Silver objects were also not found.

As the residents walked around the temple, they found that the lock on the hundi was also broken and the cash from the hundi was also missing. The village witnessed its annual temple festival recently, police said. Hundreds of devotees from surrounding villages participated in the festival.

A case was registered by the Nemili police following a complaint by the temple authorities. Special teams were formed to catch the perpetrators. Police are also reviewing security camera footage in the area.

Police said this is the second incident in the village after thieves recently took away valuables from the Draupadi Amman temple in the village. Gold jewelery from Murugan temple in neighboring Sampathurayanpet last month The village disappeared.
