As the weather begins to cool this fall, interest in holiday season travel is already heating up.
According to AAA, approximately 79.9 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday season, while 119.3 million people will travel during the Christmas period.
Google has released trends and tip data for holiday travel in 2025, sharing the best times to book flights and highlighting the most popular destinations.

The lowest prices for Thanksgiving were found to be 35 days before departure; 24-59 days are said to be in the “low price range”.
“If you want to fly just before or after Thanksgiving, you will likely find the cheapest options in October,” the report says.

When it comes to Christmas, Google says the lowest prices can be found 51 days before departure.

Approximately 32-73 days before departure is the low price range, and Google recommends booking from mid-October to mid-November.

Early booking is recommended for international travel; 49 days before departure to be exact.
According to Google, the most expensive day to book a flight is Sunday, and Tuesday is the cheapest day.

The organization says the most popular destination for Thanksgiving travel is Columbia, South Carolina.

According to Google, the most preferred destinations this year are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and St. Lucia.

“With cold temperatures on the horizon in many parts of the United States, it is no surprise that travelers are choosing palm trees over fir trees,” the report said.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average domestic round-trip price in the first quarter of 2025 was $397, down 0.4% from last year.
