The resolution, adopted by a vote of 25 to 7 with 14 abstentions, strongly regretted Iran’s violent intervention in the peaceful protests that broke out on December 28, resulting in thousands of deaths, widespread injuries and mass arrests across the country.
The UNHRC decision extended the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran by two years and the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran by one year. It also called for the Panel to urgently investigate the crackdown on nationwide protests that, according to the Council’s statement, began on 28 December 2025.
The resolution also called on the Iranian government to fulfill its human rights obligations by stopping extrajudicial killings, arbitrary deprivations of life, enforced disappearances, sexual and gender-based violence, arbitrary arrests, detention without contact, torture and other cruel treatment, especially against peaceful protesters.
Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi called External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the evolving situation in the region.
EAM Jaishankar shared on X: “I received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. We discussed the developing situation in and around Iran.”

The development comes in the wake of the deadly protest in Iran, with India issuing a travel advisory on January 5, 2026, urging its citizens to avoid ‘non-essential’ travel to Iran amid the recent unrest.
