Energy Resources and Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, said that allegations of irregularities in the appointment of government lawyers in lower courts are baseless and the appointments were made in a transparent manner.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat in Chennai, he said false information was being spread alleging corruption in the appointment of government lawyers in lower courts in the state. “These allegations were not true. District Collectors examine the profiles of the applicants and conduct extensive background verification,” he said.

“The appointment of government lawyers is done in a 100 percent fair and transparent manner. Nearly 5,000 applications have been received from across the state. If there is any allegation that money has been accepted or someone’s name has been misused, a complaint can be made and strict action will be taken,” he said.

He said that appointments have been made to only 3 districts so far. The election process continues in the remaining districts. Currently, temporary appointments are only made for six months.

“Police verification of an applicant does not mean that person has been appointed. This is only part of the background verification process. After 45 years, the appointment of government lawyers is carried out in a transparent manner.”
