Govt revokes detention of activist Sonam Wangchuk

According to a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Wangchuk has already spent almost half of his detention period under the Law. He was detained on September 26.
The ministry said the government remains committed to promoting an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. “In furtherance of this goal and after due consideration, the government has decided to rescind the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect…” the statement said.

The Center had previously defended his detention and told the Supreme Court that Wangchuk was the “chief provocateur” behind violence in Leh on September 24 that left four people dead and dozens injured. The court maintained that all procedural safeguards under the NSA were followed and the situation calmed down after his detention.
The ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the government is actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region.
However, he noted that the prevailing atmosphere of bandwagons and protests has harmed the peaceful character of the society and has adversely affected various segments of society, including students, job candidates, businesses, tour operators and tourists, as well as the general economy.Also Read: Modi govt exposed once again, Sonam Wangchuk jailed without evidence: Kejriwal
The government also reiterated its commitment to provide all necessary security measures for Ladakh. He expressed the hope that issues related to the region will be resolved through constructive participation and dialogue, including through the high-powered committee mechanism and other appropriate platforms.
Welcome statement but no room for violence: LG VK Saxena
Ladakh Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Saturday welcomed the central government’s cancellation of Sonam Wangchuk’s detention.
Saxena stated that all concerns and problems can be resolved amicably through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding. He underlined that there is no place for agitation, bandhs, or violence in Ladakh and stressed that such actions do not contribute to meaningful progress. Instead, he said, the path of cooperation and peaceful participation should be followed to achieve lasting solutions.
Haji Mohammad Haneefa Jan, independent MP from Ladakh, on Saturday welcomed the release of activist Sonam Wangchuk following the lifting of her detention under NSA, calling it a “great day for Ladakh” and called for the release of other jailed activists.
