Greene King pub loved by generations shuts its doors after 185 years | UK | News

The beloved Greene King pub has closed its doors after more than 180 years of trading. Located at the crossroads of what is commonly known as the Four Lane Ends in Over Hulton, Bolton, The Red has provided family entertainment for years via the adjacent Wacky Warehouse.

But last month Greene King announced it had begun consultations with staff over the proposed closure of the Salford Road venue and has now confirmed the Hungry Horses-branded bar has closed permanently. A company spokesman said: “We can confirm that Red Lion ceased trading on 26 April.

“We continue to work closely with our team members to identify opportunities at our other nearby bars where possible.

“We are grateful to everyone who has supported the Red Lion over the years and look forward to welcoming them to our other pubs in the local area in the near future.”

“So sad, someone else is kicking the dust,” said one customer, while another added: “I’ve been here for lunch and dinner many times over the years. It’ll be a sad day when it closes.”

A third said: “I love it here, kids can play. Aren’t there plenty of pubs you can take your kids to on birthdays where you can have a family meal and the kids can have fun too?”

Others shared their own cherished memories of the venue, including “great times from the late 70s to the late 80s,” “especially Sunday nights in the main hall when we would gather around a small table in the middle and expand the circle around it as more people arrived.”

For generations this was a popular meeting point for miners working at the nearby Hulton Colliery.

Greene King has invited locals to explore other nearby businesses including Bee Hive and the Blundell Arms in Horwich.
