Greyhound racing’s annual bill hits a quarter-billion from taxpayers

Taxpayers across the country spend more than a quarter of a billion dollars each year subsidizing greyhound racing, with Queensland taxpayers winning the booby prize for biggest contributors to a declining “industry”, the Library of Parliament has found.

The Library of Parliament research, requested by NSW Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi, also reveals that despite large donations from taxpayers, dog racing often results in significant losses in every state.

Government funding totals around $194 million in direct aid to industry across Australia in 2024, with around $60 million for publicly funded regulators.
