A forest guard was killed and another injured when a rhino attacked them in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

The incident occurred around noon while two guards were on routine patrol near Bordoloni Camp under the park’s Kohora Range, officials said.

“Home watchman Sahabuddin succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a hospital in Kohora for emergency treatment,” said Arun Vignesh CS, Deputy Director of Kaziranga.

Another staff member, Ramen Borah, was transferred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital after preliminary treatment at Kohora medical facility. Doctors said he was under medical observation.

The medical college is about 90 km east of Kohora.

Officials said the incident underlined the dangers faced by frontline forest staff in protecting wildlife and protecting the rhino habitat, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a core area of 430 square kilometres.
