Guerilla artists leave 1 bizarre item in 40-stone ice cubes in protest | UK | News

Guerrilla artists froze what appeared to be dog poop in 40-stone blocks of ice before depositing it outside some of London’s most prestigious galleries and auction houses for a show during the annual contemporary art celebrations.

Frieze Week was launched in the capital in 2003 and has since gone global, but in recent years it has been accused of depicting the art world at its “most brazenly commercial, greedy and capitalist”.

Last week’s show by a group known as Konn Artiss was apparently aimed at “blurring the lines between art, nonsense and market criticism.” The collective has previously made headlines with its shows in Venice and Washington. A statement near the work, outside Phillips Auction House in upscale Berkley Square, read: “When the market freezes, art melts. This is not a protest. It’s a reflection. We’re all stuck in the same ice.”

The guerrilla artist added: “I froze a block of shit because that’s how the market feels right now. The frame on the wall is context; the ice on the pavement is reality. Make of it what you will.”

Earlier in the week, the group dropped frozen blocks containing miniature sculptures of some of the art world’s best-known figures, including Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Tracey Emin and Jeff Koons, at London’s biggest art week.
