Gunman opens fire at Mexican pyramid, killing a tourist and wounding 6

MEXICO CITY — A gunman opened fire at a pyramid in Mexico’s famed archaeological site of Teotihuacán on Monday, fatally wounding a Canadian tourist and wounding at least six others, authorities said.
Authorities said the gunman later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Images circulating in Mexican media showed visitors appearing to crouch at the base of the Pyramid of the Moon, while a man in a checkered shirt was seen on top of the pyramid. Reports indicated that he may have opened fire from the ancient pyramid.
There has been no statement yet regarding the identity of the perpetrator or the identity of the deceased. There was also no direct indication of a cause.
Mexican authorities said they were treating the injured and investigating what was behind the attack.
The incident comes as Mexico prepares to host this summer’s World Cup football extravaganza.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly said that Mexico has a security plan for football matches despite the ongoing violence in the country.
On Monday, Sheinbaum lamented the attack on the pyramid.
“We are deeply saddened by what happened in Teotihuacán today,” Sheinbaum wrote in a post on X. “I express my deepest condolences to those affected and their families.”
Following the shooting, authorities said the sprawling archaeological site, which is among Mexico’s most visited tourist attractions, was calm and under control. Located northeast of Mexico City, the region is among the leading Central American archaeological sites.
