South Korea’s Haeran Ryu said he felt in an “unreal dream” as he claimed his second major title in two weeks by beating Brooke Henderson in the Evian Championship play-offs.
Ryu, who made history with a 60 in the under-11s on Saturday and took the lead with three shots in the under-18s on the night, shot a 71 on Sunday and his only birdie reached the east of France on the 18th.
Ryu had to watch as Canadian Henderson, who started the day seven strokes adrift, struggled again and was forced into a play-off with his third eagle of the day on the final hole to seal a 7-under 64.
However, when 2022 winner Henderson drifted off the tee on the extra hole and had to bank, Ryu took full advantage and eventually made a birdie where his opponent could only manage a par.
“This is just a dream right now because before three weeks [ago] I don’t have a major championship, but now I have two in a row,” said Ryu, who also triumphed at the Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine in June.
“It’s an unreal dream right now. So many great names [are] “I’m very happy to have my name on the trophy.”
Ryu’s victory means she takes the top prize of $1.4 million (£1 million) and becomes one of only two players to win all four of the women’s events so far this term.
World number one Nelly Korda, who missed the cut in Evian-les-Bains, won both the Chevron Championship and the US Women’s Open earlier in the season.
Ryu’s latest success is even more remarkable considering he missed the cut at this event 12 months ago and is ranked 61st at PGA Frisco in 2025.
At one stage on Sunday it looked like Aki Iwai was capable of becoming a big winner for the first time.
The Japanese player had a share of the lead along with Ryu in 18th, but his missed birdie putt meant he finished the tournament in third place, 18th overall.
Compatriots Miyu Yamashita and Mao Saigo finished three shots further behind South Korea’s Jin-Hee Im at 15-under.
Anna Nordqvist is Europe’s leading under-13 player, while British duo Charley Hull and second-round leader Lottie Woad are back at under-eight.
