Haldia seaport in West Bengal designated as immigration post

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has designated Haldia port in West Bengal as an immigration post, the ministry said in a notification on Monday, June 22, 2026.

There are currently 40 port immigration posts along India’s coastline and Haldia will be the 41st on the list.

Haldia Dock Complex, which was built in 1968 to take the load of Kolkata port, started international operations in 1977 with the opening of a port here.

MHA’s notification is likely aimed at increasing maritime trade and tourist movement through the eastern port. The move comes just days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in West Bengal for the first time.

Early on May 29, three ports in Gujarat-Dahej, Sikka and Tuna Tekra were designated as immigration outposts.
