Former Vice President Kamala Harris thanked her supporters at the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) annual winter convention in Los Angeles on Friday for defending “our democracy and the rule of law.”

Harris, who became the party’s 2024 presidential candidate without a primary election after former President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, said Democrats expressed their gratitude to her for being “the public face of a lot of the work we do.”

“People come up to me afterwards in various places, and when they thank me, they thank you for defending our democracy, the rule of law, our values ​​and principles, our society, the breadth and depth of who we are as a nation, with all our beautiful differences,” he said in his speech. he said.

Harris continued: “When they thank me, they’re thanking you for the work you’ve done to protect the fundamental principles that underpin the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. So thank you for everything you’ve done, have done, and will do.”

Harris recently ruled out launching a 2026 gubernatorial campaign in her home state of California, but she’s keeping the door wide open to a 2028 presidential run.

“Obviously we should be focusing on the midterms,” he said Friday. “But Democrats, we must also have a clear vision of what will happen after the midterm elections. And after Trump. We must answer the question. We must answer the question: What comes next for our party and our democracy?”

The former vice president also touched on recent Democratic victories in key local races.

“From Jackson to Atlanta, from Sacramento to New York. The American people have sent the message that they want leaders who fight for affordability, for health care, for yes for people’s right to participate in democracy,” Harris said.

Harris also lashed out at President Donald Trump, his policies and the “Make America Great Again” movement.
