Harry Styles has recalled the unexpected chain of events that led to his viral appearance in St. Peter’s Square in Rome following the announcement of the new Pope last year.
The 31-year-old singer met with Pope Benedict XIV in May. Leo sent fans into a frenzy after he was spotted in the crowd making his first public speech about his new role.
On Friday, Greg James appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show as he promoted his new album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Harry admitted that he occasionally came to the Italian capital not for a conclave but for a haircut.
‘It happened, I was getting a haircut in Rome,’ and the host joked: ‘We’ve come a long way for this.’
Harry continued: ‘And then all these people were chanting “Habemus Papam!” I heard them start shouting. [We have a Pope!] and people started running down the street’.
‘Then the man who was cutting my hair stopped cutting my hair and said: ‘Habemus Papam! There’s a new Pope, there’s a new Pope!’

Luckily, the hairdresser eventually finished cutting the hitmaker’s barnet before joining the crowd to witness the historic moment.
Harry later joked and laughed that the new head of the Catholic Church had exaggerated his visit to Rome: “I thought, ‘Who’s getting all the attention?'”
Elsewhere, the singer, who announced a seven-city global residency tour for 2026 called Together, Together to coincide with her new album, admitted she had to ‘fall in love with music again’ after a three-year break.
Speaking to Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby on Capital Breakfast, he said: ‘I think for me when I finished the last tour it was quite long and I think I had reached the end of it and I felt like I needed a really strong reason why I was going to make another album before I made another album.
“The answer can’t just be ‘I’m done touring, now I’m going to do another album and then I’ll do this, then I’ll put that out and then I’ll do another tour’.”
‘I think a big part of it for me was paying a little bit more attention to some other corners of my life that I didn’t always pay that much attention to when I was on tour for a long time.’
He continued: “So for me, honestly, it was a pivotal few years of falling in love with music again and understanding why being in a crowd is so special for people.”
Harry’s final tour will see him Making 50 stops in Amsterdam, London and São Paulo, Mexican city, new york, MelbourneAnd Sydney From May to December 2026.
But while promoting Friday’s concerts, Harry got fans talking as he spoke with a distinctively American twang.

Her new tour, which will coincide with her new album, will make stops in Amsterdam, London, São Paulo, Mexico City, New York, Melbourne and Sydney from May to December 2026.
He also announced that the video for his new single Aperture will be released on Friday at 17:00.
The former One Direction star, who grew up in Cheshire, appeared on Hits Radio to discuss his upcoming shows with some fans who noticed the change in his accent.
The singer mentioned that while he was on stage, he found old photos he took while on tour with the band.
‘I’m really happy I did this. “Sometimes there are photos I find with One Direction that I forget I took,” he said.
Fans immediately took to social media to comment on the change in accent, with some writing: ‘He sounds American.’
‘Okay, but where did his accent go?’… ‘His accent has really changed! He forgot his roots again with his voice!’
‘I’ve been watching my good friend Harry Styles in all his new interviews like it’s a bedtime story. But it was something when his American accent jumped out every few words.’
‘Is it just me or does Harry’s voice sound softer now and does he have a bit of an American accent?’
Speaking about the residency programme, Harry said: ‘It feels really exciting [to be back]. It got to the point where I finished the album, lived with it for a while and felt like okay the music was ready, I’m really excited.
‘I’m excited to get people to hear it and that felt like a really good reason why the timing was right to release it.’
And speaking of setting the scene – Harry was asked if it really was ‘Kiss All the Time’. Disco, Occasionally.”
‘This is a life mantra! “It’s unhealthy to go to the disco all the time, so live your life with love and affection and then taking a break every now and then to have some fun is a really good way to approach your life,” she said.

Fans were quick to comment on social media about the change in his accent, with some writing: ‘He sounds American.’
‘And I feel like that’s what I’ve been doing for the last few years and that it’s led to positive changes in my life, so… You could probably quit [kissing] food and stuff – definitely a long lunch break – and then I get right back to it… I spent a lot of time with Italians last year and they’re kissing all the time, so… it’s just art imitating life.’
Before leaving, Harry also shared some secrets about the tour, which is planned for later this year. He said: ‘The tour is just about having fun and being together.
‘The feeling that I’m up here and you’re down there, I think that’s a lot of what this album is trying to eliminate.
‘I want the tour to have the same feeling. ‘I want it to feel like I’m here dancing with you too, I’m here for what you’re here for.’
Harry lives in Hampstead, London, and is currently in a relationship with American actress Zoe Kravitz.

His new album is KISS ALL THE TIME. DISCO will be released OCCASIONALLY on Friday, March 6th.
