Hate speech laws just one piece of the puzzle

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced new legislative and policy measures to tackle antisemitism, including stronger hate speech offenses and expanded visa powers.
The package follows the anti-Semitic terror attack on Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach, in which 15 people were killed, as well as growing concern within the Jewish community that government action has been inadequate since the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
The proposed reforms target hate speech that incites violence, increase penalties, make hate a criminal offense for online threats, allow listing of extremist organizations, and create a federal crime for serious racial libel.
