Haytor Vale: The village at the heart of Ann Widdecombe tragedy

Widdecombe was described as a frequent worshiper at the Abbey Church at Buckfast Abbey, where the community said he would be “missed and fondly remembered”.

The monastic community expressed their “sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”

Meanwhile, her former chauffeur Peter Horrall, who left flowers near her home, spoke of a “wonderful, very kind” woman.

He said it was “a privilege” to drive it.

“I liked him because if you asked him a question you got an answer – no kidding.”

Located in the nearby village of Ilsington, a short drive from Devon’s winding roads, Widdecombe was often seen in the local shop.

Villagers there said he always made time to “smile and wave”, while local resident Jane Parsons added that the ongoing police investigation had them “concerned”.

Uniformed police officers go door to door checking people and asking for helpful information.

While these investigations continue, all the villagers can do is wait and think for more news.
