Heritage Dept To Find Dinosaur Eggs In Mancherial

Hyderabad: After finding a 230-million-year-old tree fossil at Bopparam in Mancherial district, the heritage department is preparing to search for dinosaur eggs in the area. Exploration work, which will last three days, will begin shortly in Sompeta in the region.

The investigation will be conducted by a team of technical officers, including deputy director P. Nagaraju, deputy director Mallu Naik and three officials from the heritage department.

The ‘dinosaurium’ at the GP Birla Archaeological Museum houses a quotasaurus fossil dating back to the Lower Jurassic age, about 160 million years ago. It was excavated from Yamanpalli in undivided Adilabad district. There are reports of dinosaur bone fragments, turtle and animal footprints from the Jurassic period being found at Yamanapalli.

“A meeting was held under the guidance of department director Prof. K. Arjun Rao to find the dinosaur eggs. If found, it will be kept in the fossil gallery planned to be built in the State Museum,” an official said.

The team will also search for more fossils that can be displayed in the upcoming gallery. The official said this will benefit students, future generations and researchers in understanding ancient formations.
