‘He’s in Bigger Trouble Now’
CNN analyst and former Obama administration advisor David Axelrod said Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is in bigger trouble than ever with Democrats and has predicted the party will have a new Senate leader after the 2026 midterm elections.
Schumer spent Sunday night and all of Monday as a maid. sandbag more so than ever before for members of his own party.
Sunday, eight Senate Democrats voted to advance a Republican bill to fund and reopen the shuttered federal government on October 1. Republicans control the chamber 53-47, but 60 votes were needed to overcome the procedural hurdle known as cloture. Eight Democrats gave the bill the 60 votes it needed, while one Republican voted against the measure.
Senate Democrats held out in hopes that Republicans would agree to support an extension of Covid-era subsidies for health care premiums under the Affordable Care Act. These subsidies will expire on December 31, and the average out-of-pocket premium cost is expected to increase after that date. couple For the majority of the 24 million Americans who receive health care under the ACA. Republicans did not agree to the extension, but eight Democrats gave them the necessary votes anyway. Although Schumer was not one of the eight, Democrats were outraged by what they saw as Schumer’s failure to challenge his own convention or his tacit endorsement of secessions.
Axelrod appeared on Monday AC360 on CNN, where Anderson Cooper “Do you think Schumer might be in trouble with the left wing of the party?” he asked.
“I think he’s in trouble,” Axelrod replied. “I think he’s in more trouble now. Honestly, I think Senator Schumer has been there since 1982. My guess is that he won’t be the leader of the party in 2027 after this election unless something truly surprising happens.”
Axelrod headed elections in several states last week; Democrats won big in New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
“And I think one of the issues that Republicans need to consider right now is that Democrats have done a very good job of shining a bright light on the Affordable Care Act and the overall issue of health care costs,” he continued. “And now Republicans have been determined to oppose the resolution. Maybe they’ll change their minds. But that’s a heavy burden for them to carry into the midterm elections.”
Schumer in March we agreed advancing a Republican funding bill without receiving any concessions.
