Police officer investigated over use of AI to ‘create evidence’
A criminal investigation has been launched against a police officer accused of using artificial intelligence to “create evidentiary material”.
Derbyshire Police are investigating and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed their co-operation in the matter. The investigation focuses on the officer’s alleged use of artificial intelligence technology.
According to a report in the Financial Times, the officer allegedly used AI to “create evidentiary material in a number of cases.”
The CPS said it was “in contact” with defense teams and courts who may have been affected by the alleged conduct.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “A criminal investigation has been launched for allegedly perverting the course of justice following allegations that a police officer used AI systems to create evidentiary material in a number of cases.
“The force is working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to cases that could potentially be affected, but no further details are available as the investigation is still in its early stages.
“The officer involved has been suspended from frontline duties pending the outcome of the investigation. No arrests have been made.”
That same week, a new national center for artificial intelligence in policing called PoliceAI opened.
At Wednesday’s launch, PoliceAI interim director Alex Murray said: “Crime and technology are evolving rapidly.
“Police must keep pace by responsibly embracing AI to catch criminals and keep people safe.”
