Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand Hinduja passes away: Career, family, net worth, and all you need to know

According to reports citing sources close to the family on Tuesday, Hinduja Group Chairman Gopinath P. Hinduja passed away in London.
The industry powerhouse was 85 years old at the time of his death.
A PTI report citing sources said that Gopinath Hinduja, widely known as a general practitioner among his business partners, had been unwell for the last few weeks and died at a hospital in London.
Gopinath Hinduja, from the second generation of the family, took over as Chairman of the Hinduja Group after the death of his elder brother Srihand in May 2023.
Gopichand Hinduja’s career
He was born in India in 1940 and controlled the Indian conglomerate Hinduja Group. The son of Parmanand Hinduja and his wife Jamuna, Gopichand and his brothers Srichand, Prakash and Ashok, he is credited with establishing the Hinduja Group and transforming it into an international conglomerate with operations in 38 countries and a 2,00,000+ strong team.
Gopinath Hinduja, from the second generation of the family, took over as Chairman of the Hinduja Group after the death of his elder brother Srihand in May 2023.
Gopinath graduated from Jai Hind College in Mumbai in 1959. In the same year, he joined the textile and trading family company covering India and Iran.
He is considered one of the key people who transformed the Hinduja Group into a global, multi-billion dollar business.
Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group achieved many milestones, including the acquisition of Gulf Oil in 1984 and the subsequent acquisition of the then struggling Ashok Leyland in 1987. Known today as one of the most successful turnaround stories in business history, the acquisition of Ashok Leyland was the first major NRI investment in India.
Before taking over as Chairman of the Hinduja Group, Gopinath Hinduja was the Chairman of Hinduja Automotive Ltd, UK.
He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Westminster and an Honorary Doctorate of Economics from Richmond College, London.

Gopichand Hinduja is survived by his wife Sunita Hinduja, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj and daughter Rita.
He is also survived by his brothers Prakash Hinduja and Ashok Hinduja, who ran the company’s businesses in Europe and India respectively.

According to the UK Sunday Times Rich List, Gopichand Hinduja has become the richest person in the UK for seven consecutive years.
In the latest edition of the list, published in May 2025, Gopinath Hinduja topped the list with a net worth of British Pounds 35.304 billion. ₹33,67,948.64 crore.
As of August 2025, his net worth was $20.6 billion, according to Forbes.
The Hinduja family’s wealth stems largely from businesses ranging from trucks to lubricants, banking to cable television.
The family also owns valuable real estate in London, including the Raffles London hotel, located in the historic Old War Office building in Whitehall.
