Historic grocery chain with 327 shops closes store after more than 100 years | World | News

A historic grocery store that has been in business for more than a century is closing.
Winn-Dixie, one of America’s most established regional grocery names, is undergoing a significant transformation, including store closings.
The last store the group closed its doors was the Garden Park Plaza store at 8924 N. Military Trail in Palm Beach Gardens.
The closing date has not yet been finalized, but it is thought that operations will cease in mid-April.

“Transformation sometimes requires difficult decisions, and in some cases this may mean closing a store when necessary to support the future success of our company,” Winn-Dixie said in a statement reported by The Palm Beach Post.
The company added that affected staff will have the opportunity to apply for positions in neighboring locations.
However, the company maintains a strong presence in Florida, operating approximately 327 outlets in the region; The Garden Park Plaza store is the only store in the area in question.
The closest location is out of town and over 10 miles away.
The closing follows Aldi’s 2024 acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, which includes 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets locations. Later, former Southeast general manager Anthony Hucker, along with a consortium of investors, bought back 170 Winn-Dixie locations from Aldi.
The supermarket chain was founded in Miami in 1925 and currently operates approximately 360 stores in five US states.
The closure of the Palm Beach Gardens location could be seen as a first indication of more significant transformations ahead as the food industry faces challenges predominantly from non-traditional retailers.
