‘Hit-and-run’ driver ‘who killed father-of-two as he walked his dog near village church’ appears in court

An alleged ‘hit and run’ driver appeared in court accused of killing a father of two while he was walking his dog near a village church.

Aaron Jones, 38, died two days before Christmas in 2024 after being hit by a car that reportedly left the scene.

Takeaway worker Daniel Wyke, 28, is accused of causing Mr Jones’ death by dangerous driving.

A search was launched for Mr Jones after a local man found his dog wandering aimlessly in the village of Llanpumsaint in Carmarthenshire.

The body of the father of two was found in the grounds of a roadside church.

Mr Jones was described as a ‘lovely guy’ who did a lot of work for his local area.

Local councilor Bryan Davies said the village was “very quiet” following his “tragic” death.

Mr Jones’ employer Andrew Pullman also paid tribute, writing: ‘We are all devastated by the loss of our colleague and friend Aaron Jones.

‘In the coming weeks and when the time is right, we will present a more meaningful post befitting the great man of Aaron. In the meantime, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife and young children.’

Wyke, of Carmarthen, has now appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court, where he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. No indication of defense was given.

He was bailed to appear at Swansea Crown Court next month.

Wyke was charged 12 months after Aaron’s death.

Speaking at the time, Sergeant Sara John, of Dyfed-Powys Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: ‘Our thoughts are with Aaron’s family, who continue to be at the center of this investigation.

‘We recognize this has been a lengthy investigation and I am grateful to Aaron’s family and the wider community for their patience and support while our investigations are carried out.

‘We will continue to support Aaron’s family as the case progresses and seek to achieve justice for Aaron and his loved ones.’

A previous inquest heard father-of-two Aaron was walking his dog when his body was found near Caer Salem Baptist Chapel.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
