Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday asserted ending Naxalism before the next all India Director Generals of Police (DGsP)-Inspectors of Police (IGsP) conference. Shah made this statement while speaking at the inauguration of the three-day 60th DGsP/IGsP conference in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. A Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) statement quoted Shah’s speech and said, “The Home Minister expressed confidence that the country will be completely free from the menace of Naxalism before the next DGsP/IGsP conference.” The statement was included.

Touching on the feasible steps taken by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government to completely eradicate Naxalism, the Home Minister said that the Center has strengthened the security network by constructing 586 fortified police stations in the last seven years. “As a result, the number of Naxal-affected districts has reduced from 126 in 2014 to just 11 today,” MHA said.

At the conference, the Home Minister said that the Modi government has provided permanent solutions to three hotspots, Naxalism, Northeast, Jammu and Kashmir, which have become a festering sore for the country and “very soon these regions will be like the rest of the country”. At the conference, the Minister of Internal Affairs said that security forces and police have dealt powerful blows to extremism, radicalization and narcotics by focusing on three key aspects: accuracy of intelligence, clarity of targets and synergy in action.

Shah reiterated that we need to launch a 360-degree attack against narcotics and organized crime and establish such a system that there will be no room left for drug traffickers and criminals in this country. Shah also instructed the state police forces to work with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to crack down on narcotics gangs operating at the state, national and international levels and put their masterminds behind bars.

In his speech, the Home Minister said that the DGsP/IGsP conference led by Prime Minister Modi has emerged as an important forum to resolve the internal security issues of the country, from identifying issues and challenges to formulating strategies and policies. Highlighting the achievements of the Modi government, the Home Minister said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been strengthened, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) has been made more robust, three New Penal Codes have been enacted and strong laws have been enacted against narcotics and fugitive criminals. He also said that with the full implementation of the three New Penal Codes, the police force in India will become the most modern police force in the world.
