Homes threatened as bushfire rages south-east of Perth and storms hit Queensland and Northern Territory | Australia weather

Australians on both sides of the country have been warned to be careful as floods and fires threaten their homes the next day.

The bushfire raged about 200km south-east of Perth on Friday morning, but nearby residents were no longer urged to leave their homes.

Risk warning downgraded to “watch and act”; This means the people of Bannister, Wuraming and Boddington need to monitor their environment and take action quickly if fire conditions change and the situation worsens.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said increased humidity and consolidated containment lines improved fire behavior.

But the wildfire remained wild and uncontrolled, and wind changes were expected.

Dry, gusty winds and a Christmas heatwave fueled a fire believed to have started at the Boddington gold mine.

“Temperatures were in the 30s to low 40s across much of the southwest landmass,” Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury told ABC News.

“Unfortunately this, combined with dry, harsh and easterly winds, has really increased the fire danger.

“It shouldn’t be this hot [on Friday] “It’s the same as yesterday, but there will still be some challenging conditions for firefighters battling ongoing fires in the area.”

On the other side of the country, monsoon rains continue to bring showers, rain and thunderstorms to northwestern Queensland, with residents urged to be alert for possible flooding.

The northwest monsoon continued to move along the coast, bringing showers, rain and thunderstorms to many parts of the already flooded state.

Residents of adjacent Northern Territory areas are also bracing for heavy rain and storms.

Extreme weather conditions led to a partial crane collapse on the Gold Coast on Thursday as wind speeds exceeded 80km/h.

Police declared an emergency, but no one is believed to have been injured in the incident.
