Hope for Good Governance Next Year: Kharge Jabs Centre

Bengaluru: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday came down hard on the Centre, alleging the BJP’s failures in 2025 and their “mismanagement” on various fronts. On New Year’s Eve, he wished the government to provide “good governance” next year.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kharge said, “I pray that this year will be good and everyone will be happy. I hope that the new year brings prosperity and health to everyone and that governments provide good governance next year.”
Earlier in the day, the Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition, in a post on
Citing MGNREGA and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls (two issues around which Congress is rallying in 2025), Kharge alleged that the Center was taking away citizens’ right to work and vote.

His remarks came after Parliament passed the Guarantee for Viksit Bharat-Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025, replacing MGNREGA introduced by the UPA government.
While the new law has increased guaranteed employment under MGNREGA from 100 days to 125 days, the Opposition has criticized it for removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name and introducing a 60:40 fund sharing ratio between the Center and states.
On the economic front, Kharge emphasized that the rupee has fallen and noted that the Indian currency has fallen to an all-time low of 91 against the US dollar.
Economic inequality has widened further, the top 1 percent holds 40 percent of India’s wealth, youth unemployment remains high, and paper leak scams continue unabated, he wrote.
Kharge also lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his allegations that first US President Donald Trump and later China acted as mediators in the India-Pakistan dispute.
Referring to the statements of BJP ministers after the Pahalgam terror attack, he said, “President Trump claimed ‘mediation’ at least 60 times, now even China is talking about ‘mediation’, and Modi ji remains silent.”
He also criticized the government for the situation in Manipur, inflation, environmental concerns, air pollution in North India and incidents such as Kumbh stampede and Delhi station chaos, and claimed that no responsibility has been taken.
“As a result, in 2025 too, the looting, corruption and mismanagement of the BJP has had a huge impact on the people of the country,” Kharge said in his post.
Responding to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said India has become the world’s fourth largest economy thanks to “drastic, measurable reforms”.
“While Congress perfected policy paralysis, Prime Minister Modi’s government ensured policy implementation,” Bhandari said.
