Horror as 16 killed in bus crash at tourist hotspot | World | News

At least 16 people were killed in a midnight bus crash on Indonesia’s main island of Java on Monday, authorities confirmed. According to local search and rescue chief Budiono, the vehicle carrying 34 passengers crashed into a concrete barrier on the toll road and ended up on its side.

The interstate bus was traveling from Jakarta to Yogyakarta when it overturned on the curved exit ramp of the Krapyak toll road in Semarang.

“The strong impact threw many passengers and pinned them against the body of the bus,” Budiono said.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene 40 minutes later and found 6 bodies. The other 10 victims died on the way to or in the hospital. Of the 18 survivors currently under treatment, five are in critical condition and 13 are seriously injured.

In the footage, the yellow bus can be seen standing on its side as responders and bystanders work in the middle of the ambulance fleet. Central Java Police Chief Ribut Hari Wibowo said witnesses reported that the bus accelerated before the driver lost control.

The backup driver survived with serious injuries and is in contact with authorities.

Wibowo stated that the police would test him for drugs and other prohibited substances and said, “We are still investigating the cause and questioning the injured backup driver.”
